The PS one (also called the PlayStation 1, PS1 or PSOne) was launched in July 2000. Sony redesigned this console and made it smaller than the original PlayStation video game console.
It outsold all other consoles on the market; including Sony’s own new PlayStation 2, for the remainder of the year. Sony released a tiny LCD screen with an adaptor to help power the unit for use in motor-cars.
The PS 1 is compatible with all original PlayStation software. The official abbreviation of this PlayStation is now PS one.
There are three major differences between the PS one and the original Playstation, the first being a cosmetic change to the console, the second was the Graphical User Interface of the home menu, and the third was added protection against the popular mod chip by changing the console’s internal layout and also making previous mod chip devices unusable.
The PS 1 also does not have the serial port of the original PlayStation, which allowed gamers to hook up multiple consoles for multi-player TV games. This original Playstation serial port was also used for the external mod chip, which may have been the reason why it was removed. It was also suggested that size constraints may have been an issue.
Just when players got used to the Play Station one and had bought all the games, Play Station 2 came along. Luckily for them the two machines and their games were compatible.
